WebAR, no app to install

Augmented reality that opens in a phone browser from a link or a QR code. You own it, and no platform can switch it off.

Augmented reality with no app required

Scan a QR code or tap a link, allow the camera, and it opens straight in the phone’s browser. No app to download, no account to sign into, nothing standing between the person and the experience.

WebAR is augmented reality that runs entirely in a phone’s web browser. There’s no download and nothing to install, so it’s the lowest-friction way to put AR in front of a large audience: the whole journey is scan, allow camera, and it’s running.

Under the hood we build on modern browser AR: WebXR, camera-based image tracking, face tracking and world tracking. That means the same project can anchor content to a poster, a pizza box, a product label or the room around the user. How someone gets in is whatever suits the campaign:

  • A QR code on packaging, print or an out-of-home ad
  • A short link in a bio, an SMS or an email
  • An NFC tap, no code needed at all

This page is about WebAR specifically. For filters, try-on and the wider picture, see augmented reality.

WebAR or a social filter

They solve different problems. Here’s which one actually suits what you’re trying to do.

WebAR wins

When you need to own it

It sits on your own domain, so no platform can switch it off the way Meta shut down Spark AR in January 2025. It captures data you actually own, leads, emails, sessions and conversions, and there are no content-policy surprises, which makes it the default for age-restricted brands: an alcohol brand can’t run a social filter, but it can run WebAR.

Social filter wins

When discovery is the point

A filter lives inside TikTok’s or Snapchat’s own feed, so people find it browsing rather than because you sent them a link. That built-in discovery is the one thing WebAR can’t match. Not sure which fits your brand? See AR filters and we’ll advise on the mix.

What it costs, and how it’s built

It depends on scope. A simple product viewer costs far less than a custom AR game with leaderboards and data capture. Tell us the brief and the deadline, and we’ll give you a fixed quote.

Concept & scoping

We define the experience, the trigger, QR, link or image, and how success will be measured.

Design & 3D

Custom 3D, animation and brand styling, optimised to load fast in the browser.

Build & integrate

Developed in WebAR and wired up to whatever data capture, forms or competition mechanics you need.

Test across devices

Checked on iOS and Android, Safari and Chrome, so it works for everyone, not just the newest phone.

Launch & support

We help you launch, host the experience and support the campaign while it runs.

Frequently asked questions

What is WebAR and how does it work?

WebAR is AR delivered through the phone’s browser. Scan a QR code or tap a link, allow the camera, and it runs, no app and no account needed.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. WebAR runs in Safari and Chrome on modern iPhones and Android phones, with nothing to install.

How much does a WebAR experience cost?

It depends on scope. A simple product viewer costs far less than a custom AR game with leaderboards. Tell us your brief and we’ll give you a fixed quote.

WebAR or a TikTok or Snapchat filter, which should we pick?

Social filters are best for platform-native reach. WebAR wins when you need no app, no account, your own data capture, or you’re an age-restricted brand. Not sure? See our AR filters page and we’ll advise on the right mix.

Can a WebAR experience capture data, like leads or emails?

Yes. Because it’s a web page, it can run a form, a competition with a leaderboard, or hand out reward codes, and report real analytics: sessions, dwell time, interactions and conversions. That’s the layer we built for TG4’s out-of-home campaign, to make an unmeasurable medium trackable.

Which brands have you built WebAR for?

Apache Pizza and TG4.
